‘Half of my soul is dead’: RPC MPs speak out after Anwar ‘traded principles for power’ in cabinet

Pasir Gudang MP Hasan Karim publicly wrote a poem against the Prime Minister’s breach of his promise to form a “clean government cabinet”.
Pasir Gudang MP Hasan Karim urged Anwar Ibrahim to stick to his principles in the first public sign of friction between the newly elected Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs over the prime minister’s failure to keep his promise not to include scandal-stained leaders in his cabinet. .
In the poem, Hassan recalled how Anwar continued to reassure voters that he would not “trade principles for power”.
Hassan said he was so sure of this that he carried his message “to every corner of this beautiful land”, urging people to support the call for reform.
“Yesterday I still heard from you that we will not trade principles for strength, so I believe in it,” he wrote.
“But today I am surprised by completely unfamiliar phrases. I hear people talking about Machiavellianism and realpolitik.”
Hassan said that his stance can be regarded as “naive”, adding that he has now woken up from a “nightmare”.
He said he was ashamed of his decision to lock up the texts of pamphlets and speeches from the last quarter of a century in which he put forward calls for reform, referring to “The political battle cry of Anwar’s two-year struggle against the Umno-led government.”
On Friday, Anwar announced Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as his deputy prime minister despite President Smartno facing 47 million ringgit worth of corruption charges.
The appointment came despite Anwar’s repeated promises during the general election campaign that his government would not include scandal-ridden politicians.
The move sparked public outrage and some Pakatan Harapan politicians were forced to defend Anwar’s decision to include Zahid if necessary to stay in power.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of the Barisan Nasional (BN), was instrumental in getting his coalition as a whole to support Anwar despite strong opposition from his fellow MPs and senior Umno leaders to flouting last year’s party convention resolution. Anwar or DAP.
Prior to the cabinet announcement, Hasan was one of several MPs, including newly appointed minister Nik Nazminik Ahmad, who warned Anwar against nominating those involved in ongoing court cases.
In a Facebook post last week, he said he was campaigning in support of Pakatan Harapan’s mainstream anti-corruption policy and urged Anwar to “form a cabinet free from signs of corruption and dishonesty.”
“This standard should apply fairly to all MPs, whether from PH or BN or any other coalition party in a coalition government.”
