If anyone is confused by the ending of the first episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Curious Cabinet, let us try to help! We’ll also look at the remaining episodes of Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Rarities, but here’s an explanation for the ending of Lot 36.
Lot 36 is the first series of The Cabinet of the Curious by Guillermo del Toro, directed by Guillermo Navarro and written by Rehina Collado.
To pay off his debts, Nick finds a pantry full of mysterious items to sell, but soon finds himself in a deadly and desperate situation.
Having won Lot 36 at the auction, Nick started looking for valuables in the apartment. After finding candlesticks, chairs, and a seance table, Nick is desperate for an appraisal of these items because his truck has been vandalized by his loan shark, Tommy, who owes him $12,000. Nick is also trying to make a quick $1,000 after a woman named Amelia comes to the storeroom to pay an overdue bill, only to find that Nick has bought her lot. Despite her desperate pleas to enter the ground, Nick is dismissive of her and will only let her in if she pays him a thousand dollars. He mockingly gave her a lock from the squad, and later returned to stalk him.
After giving these items to Agatha, she opened a secret compartment on the séance table that contained three books of dubious history. Knowing who to call, Agatha brings in book expert Roland, who reveals the origins of the books and the Walmart family that previously owned them. However, Nick missed the fourth and most valuable book in the series, Liber Quartus Sacramentum. In the fourth book, there are means to bind the monster, but once the “deal” is made, the book will ignite and self-destruct. If Nick can find the fourth book, all he needs is the $300,000 he was promised.
On the way back, Roland revealed that the previous owners of Lot 36, the Walmart family, were from Austria, made a fortune in steel and built tanks for the German army during World War II. After the war, the family immigrated from Austria to the United States. However, Mr. Wolmar lost his wealth and dishonored the family. Moreover, he also used his sister to charm her, but in the eyes of the whole world, she mysteriously disappeared.
Back in the parking lot, Nick and Roland discover a secret entrance to the back of parking lot 36. Entering a small secret tunnel, they discover the final book, as well as the relics of Dotty Walmart, whose body is possessed by a demonic entity but is locked in a summoning circle. Ignoring Roland’s cautious request, Nick attempted to retrieve the fourth book, breaking the summoning circle and releasing the demonic entity within.
Almost instantly, Roland was consumed by the monster and the book caught fire, signifying that the “deal” was complete. Nick tried to escape from the facility, but was chased by monsters until he reached the exit, however, he was unable to open the door. To Nick’s surprise, Amelia is on the other side and he desperately seeks her help, only to avenge her earlier rudeness and lock him inside with a padlock, which he returns. Hearing the monster approaching, Nick tried to run away again, but the monster caught him and thought he had been eaten.
In the end, what really killed Nick was his ignorance, greed and bigotry. If he helped Amelia at the beginning of the story, he could get away with it, or if he listened to Roland and followed his instructions, he could walk away with over $300,000 in his back pocket.
Roland, the occult expert behind the occult books, suffered a gruesome death in Lot 36. His knowledge of the occult, his accent, and knowledge of the history of the Wolmar family suggests that he may have known them personally.
Coincidentally, a detective book expert owned by Mr. Walmart lives nearby, which is a lot of evidence that he knows the Walmart family and keeps a close eye on them, but keeps his distance for fear of entering… Contact someone equally dangerous like mr walmart.
Roland knew how dangerous Dotty’s possessed body had become, but it wasn’t enough to allow him to escape the danger. In fact, the way he said her name with longing and sadness was just another indication that he had known Dottie for a long time.
What Roland intends to do with the books is unclear, but he may have bargained for Dottie’s return by unknowingly offering sacrifices in return.
Amelia observes Nick’s suspicious behavior in the warehouse, but there is no sign that she wants him dead. It’s a cruel moment of irony when she decides to lock him in the closet with the padlock he gave her back, however, maybe she’s just trying to play a trick on him and leave him inside for the night.
If she knew about the monster and wanted Nick to die, it would be an extreme reaction to what Nick did to her property.
Given the time of night, Eddie will be home. However, in the morning, an unpleasant surprise awaits him in the form of a demon-possessed Dottie Walmart.
